Why Choose Aromatherapy?
The art of aromatherapy has been somewhat of an enigma to most people. Everyone has that favorite scent that they love but does it actually have therapeutic value beyond the gratification they receive by simply inhaling it? The answer is YES, essential oils have astonishing healing values just as medicinal herbs do.
Plant constituents are a complex array of compounds that react with the chemicals of our own body to bring about change. When inhaled, the volatile compounds are transported via the bloodstream to different areas of the body and react with hormones, enzymes, etc. When applied through a carrier oil to the skin, as in massage, the oil is absorbed through the skin and is carried throughout, affecting our bodily systems.
Essential oils have such a wide array of compounds that they may act as a sedative in one area of the body and as a stimulant in another. Due to our individual chemical makeup, essential oils will have different effects in each one of us, but we do know that certain oils have been used for certain purposes for centuries. Discover what essential oils have in store for you by first choosing one of our ten blends to be infused into your massage treatment.

Aromatherapy was first discovered by a French chemist who, by accident, found that he was able to heal a severe burn quite rapidly and with little scarring, with lavender oil. He began to study essential oils, which are basically the distilled volatile oil of the plant, and found that the plant oils were more effective when used as a whole, rather than an isolated extract. For example, it is widely known that eucalyptus is an effective antiseptic, a much stronger antiseptic than its isolated compound, eucalyptol. The term, “volatile” merely refers to the fact that the oil readily vaporizes when exposed to the air.
Essential oils have a powerful effect on the respiratory system, by causing an increase in bronchial secretions they are very effective expectorant and antispasmodic agents. Their stimulating effect on the circulatory system can have anti-inflammatory responses by allowing the blood to flow more freely. Although it is not recommended to take essential oils orally, digestion can be aided by applying the oils externally. No system in the body is more powerfully impacted by the use of essential oils as the immune system. “Virtually all essential oils have bactericidal properties, and by promoting the production of white blood cells, they can help prevent and treat infectious illness.”(1) It was known during the Middle Ages that people who used essential oils frequently had a high resistance to the plague and other communicable diseases. The nervous system is also greatly impacted by essential oils. Whether the effect is psychological or physiological, many studies have shown that exposure to certain essential oils greatly aided sleep, lessened anxiety, and improved emotional stability.
In conclusion, ‘Aromatherapy’ is not simply about a pleasing aroma, but is truly an ancient healing art that continues to be studied today so that we may be beneficiaries of all that the plant kingdom has to offer.
