Trigger Points are areas of intense muscle tenderness that cause pain to be referred to other areas of the body. For example, the pain, tingling, and sensation of numbness that may be radiating down your arm is oftentimes caused by trigger points in the neck. Our various nerve pathways in the body are responsible for this deferred pain sensation.
Trigger Points can result from a number of causes including injuries, poor posture, skeletal asymmetry, overuse of a muscle or group of muscles, toxicity in the system, stress, nutritive deficiencies, and even food allergies. During times of physical or emotional strain, trigger points cause muscles to spasm. This induces pain, decreased mobility and circulation to the area.
Trigger Point Therapy refers to the application of sustained pressure using fingers, knuckles or elbows to the trigger point area for several seconds. By compressing the muscle tissue you allow the muscle fibers to reset, allowing relaxation to occur and a flushing of the muscle with fresh blood and oxygen upon release. Pain relief is often experienced immediately and gentle stretching of the muscle afterwards allows a re-educating of the muscle tissue.
Acute or temporary muscle pain is often relieved in one session but chronic pain conditions will require several sessions to facilitate healing. Trigger Point Therapy is often used in conjunction with other therapies to achieve maximum results.
You don't have to live with debilitating pain, limited mobility and flexibility. Take control of your health and happiness by taking care of your physical being. A Deep Tissue Massage just might be the answer your body is looking for.
